Study on the Version You Are Sitting: The 2026/2027 Exam-Version Toggle Explained

Every CaseSavvy dashboard has a switch between the 2027 labels and the 2025–2026 labels. The question we get most is which one to study on, and the short answer is: the version you are sitting. This post explains what the switch actually changes (the grouping of the same answers), how the nine tracked areas roll up into the current six domains, why the weights differ, and what to do if your test date is near the July 1, 2027 boundary. The facts are from NBCC’s candidate handbook[1] and 2027 specifications[2]; the mapping is CaseSavvy’s.

What the toggle changes, and what it does not

  • Every question in the library is tagged with one of nine 2027 areas (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4, 5, 6). That tag never changes.
  • The toggle regroups those tags under the current outline’s six labels for display: accuracy bars, drill buttons, and weights.
  • Your answers, streaks, and rolling accuracy are stored once. Flip the switch back and forth and nothing is lost; the bars just regroup.
  • The weights shown next to each label are the published ones for that version: the 2027 spec’s six-domain figures on one side[2], the current handbook’s on the other[1].

Why the mapping looks the way it does

The current outline and the 2027 specification cut the same work differently. Legal and ethical compliance, indirect client care, and professional development all sit inside “Professional Practice and Ethics” today; counselor self-awareness sits with “Core Counseling Attributes”; intake and assessment are one domain; treatment planning and continuity of care are one domain. Areas of Clinical Focus, the current exam’s diagnosis domain, is evaluated through the case scenarios rather than at the item level[1], so it has no bucket of its own on the dashboard; the clinical content lives inside every case.

Near the boundary

If your authorization window straddles July 1, 2027, your test date decides the form, not your registration date. Confirm with NBCC or your state board, then set the toggle once and leave it. Switching every week changes the grouping, not the data, and it makes the dashboard harder to read.

  • The cases: an intake and two sessions, four-option questions, a first-or-most-appropriate stem.
  • The clinical substance: assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, crisis, ethics.
