NCMHCE Cost, Registration, and Eligibility: The Complete Checklist

The NCMHCE has two front doors, and which one you use changes the paperwork, the timeline, and who approves you to sit. This guide walks through eligibility, the registration steps, the costs to budget for (exam fee and everything around it), and the mistakes that delay candidates by months.

Who is eligible

Path 1: State licensure

Most candidates take the NCMHCE because their state board requires or accepts it for clinical licensure (LPC, LCPC, LMHC, LPCC, and similar titles). In this path your state board determines eligibility, usually after you have completed an approved master’s degree and, in many states, some or all of your supervised post-degree hours. The board then authorizes NBCC to let you register.

Path 2: National certification

The NCMHCE is also the exam for NBCC’s Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) specialty credential. Here eligibility is set by NBCC’s certification requirements rather than a state board.

How registration works

1. Get approved. Your state board (licensure path) or NBCC (certification path) confirms you meet requirements. This is usually the slowest step.
2. Register with NBCC. Create or sign in to your NBCC account (the ProCounselor portal), complete the exam registration, and pay the exam fee.
3. Receive your authorization. NBCC issues an authorization with a testing window during which you must schedule and sit for the exam.
4. Schedule at Pearson VUE. Pick a testing center and date inside your window. Popular centers fill weeks out near graduation seasons; book early.

What it costs

The exam fee is the smallest cost of a failed attempt. A retake means a new registration fee, a waiting period, and a delayed license, which for many candidates means months of a lower billing rate or a job offer on hold. Common delays and how to avoid them

• Applying to NBCC before the board approves you. In the licensure path, NBCC waits for the board’s authorization. Start the board application first.
• Transcript problems. Boards want official transcripts sent directly by the university. Order them the day you decide to test.
• Name mismatches. The name on your NBCC registration must match your government ID exactly, or the center can turn you away.
• Letting the authorization window lapse. Schedule the Pearson VUE appointment as soon as the authorization arrives, even if the date is weeks out.
• Requesting accommodations late. Testing accommodations go through NBCC in advance with documentation, not through the testing center on the day.
