NCE Exam Day: Check-In, ID Rules, the Break After Question 100, and What to Expect

By · 7 min read · Exam basics

Most NCE exam-day stress comes from not knowing what happens between the parking lot and the first question. This guide walks through the day in order, using only what NBCC’s candidate handbook and the Pearson VUE rules agreement say[1, 2], for both the test-center and the online (OnVUE) versions. Policies change; reread the current handbook the week of your exam.

How long is the NCE exam session?

The NCE is a 200-question, multiple-choice, non-sectioned exam inside a 255-minute appointment[1]:

SegmentTime
Test administration and confidentiality agreement (NDA)5 minutes
Tutorial on navigating and answering10 minutes
The examination itself225 minutes (3 hours 45 minutes)
One scheduled break, after question 10015 minutes
Total appointment255 minutes (4 hours 15 minutes)

You have 5 minutes to accept the NDA or the exam ends, so read it, but do not linger[1]. 160 of the 200 questions are scored; the rest are unscored field-test items you cannot identify. Scoring is explained in NCE passing score.

Before the day

  • After you schedule, Pearson VUE emails a confirmation with your registration ID, date, time, appointment length, test center location, and any approved accommodations[1].
  • You can reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment by calling Pearson VUE; the handbook lists a $50 rescheduling fee[1]. Missing the appointment without rescheduling forfeits your registration and fees.
  • Accommodations must be approved in writing before you schedule, and candidates with approved accommodations schedule by phone[1, 3]. Choosing OnVUE means testing without special accommodations[1].

Arrival and check-in

You can check in up to 30 minutes before your appointment and up to 15 minutes after it. Arrive more than 15 minutes late and you will not be allowed to test, and you forfeit the fee[1]. Before you enter you review and sign the Pearson VUE candidate agreement.

Identification

Bring two original, unexpired IDs. The primary must be government-issued with your name, photo, and signature (driver’s license, state ID, military ID, passport). The secondary needs your name and signature, or your name and a recent photo. The first and last name must exactly match the name you registered under; the wrong ID counts as a missed appointment[1].

What you can and cannot bring

  • No phones, smart watches, notes, cameras, or calculators in the testing room; a locker holds your keys, wallet, and phone[1].
  • Expect to empty your pockets, show your ears and sleeves if asked, and pat yourself down before entering, and again after any break[1].
  • Writing materials are provided at check-in. Return them all at the end, or you will not get your score report[1].
  • No eating or drinking during the test; the rules agreement lets you access comfort aids, medication, and food during a break[1].

During the exam

Questions appear one at a time, numbered in the upper right, with options A through D. You click to answer, can change an answer as often as you like, and can go back to review questions[1]. An on-screen clock shows time remaining. The scheduled break comes after question 100; you can take other breaks, but the clock keeps running during them[1]. Everything is recorded on video.

Online through OnVUE

  • Same check-in window: up to 30 minutes early, no later than 15 minutes after your appointment[1].
  • ID: one valid, government-issued original photo ID, photographed at check-in and shown to the proctor on webcam, plus a real-time photo of you[1].
  • System check: run Pearson VUE’s check on the exact computer right before testing. You will show the room on webcam and capture four photos of your space[1].
  • Your space: alone in the room (service animals excepted), clear desk, no books, phone, smart watch, or exam-related material visible, including boards on the wall. No headphones, dual monitors, touchscreens, or tablets[1].
  • Staying put: you may not leave your seat except for the scheduled 15-minute break after question 100. Water in a clear container is allowed; no food, gum, or reading aloud[1].
  • The big difference: after the break you cannot return to questions 1 to 100[1]. Finish any review of the first half before you take it.
  • If the power fails: the exam restarts at the last question you completed once you log back in[1].

Test center or online?

OnVUE saves the drive but adds strict room rules and an unforgiving seat rule; a knock on the door can end the exam. If your home is unpredictable or you need accommodations, a test center is usually the calmer choice.

Rehearse the whole four hours first

Pacing checkpoints

225 minutes for 200 questions is about 68 seconds each. Glance at the clock at these points rather than after every item:

After questionElapsed testing time (about)Time left (about)
5056 min169 min
100113 min112 min
150169 min56 min
200225 min0 min

Most candidates finish the first pass early and have time to review marked items. If you are behind at item 50, speed up on recall questions you either know or do not. More tactics are in NCE test-taking strategies.

What happens after you finish?

You may be asked to complete a short evaluation. At a test center the proctor then gives you an unofficial score report, which includes your photograph; online, you view and print it from your Pearson account[1]. For state-licensure candidates, CCE sends official scores to your state board within 30 days of the end of the monthly testing cycle, with no request needed[1]. If the result is not what you wanted, the minimum wait to retest is 30 days[1]; read the NCE retake plan before you reregister.

What should you review in the last week?

Do not start new material. Rework questions you missed, review the cards you keep getting wrong, and skim cheat sheets for the heavy areas. The free NCE topic library has a one-page cheat sheet for every topic; ethics topics such as confidentiality and its limits and duty to warn and protect are worth a final pass. For how the whole run-up should look, see how long to study for the NCE and what the NCE covers.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the NCE exam?

The appointment is 255 minutes: 5 minutes for the confidentiality agreement, a 10-minute tutorial, 225 minutes of testing for 200 questions, and one 15-minute scheduled break after question 100.

What ID do I need for the NCE?

At a test center, two original, unexpired IDs: a government-issued primary ID with your name, photo, and signature, and a secondary ID with your name and signature or a recent photo. The name must exactly match your registration. Online (OnVUE) testing requires one valid government-issued photo ID.

What happens if I am late for the NCE?

You can check in up to 15 minutes after your appointment time. Arrive later than that and you will not be allowed to test, and you forfeit your exam fee.

Can I go back to previous questions on the NCE?

Yes, you can change answers and review questions. If you test online through OnVUE, the handbook says you cannot return to questions 1 to 100 after the scheduled break.

Do I get my NCE score right away?

You receive an unofficial score report at the end: from the proctor at a test center, or in your Pearson account if you tested online. For state licensure, official scores go to your board within 30 days of the end of the monthly testing cycle.
