Two acronyms run the counseling world, and the exam wants you to never confuse them: ACA is the professional home, and NBCC is the credentialer. Mix them up and you'll miss easy points, because they do fundamentally different jobs.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) is the field's flagship membership and professional organization. It's an umbrella built from divisions (currently around 19–20) that serve specialties and interests. ACA's biggest deliverable for the exam is the ACA Code of Ethics — the profession's central ethical document. Think of ACA as the association that advocates for counselors, sets ethics, hosts the conference, and publishes the Journal of Counseling & Development.
Know the flagship divisions by their initials, because stems drop them cold:
- ACES — Counselor Education and Supervision
- ASCA — School Counselors
- AMHCA — Mental Health Counselors
- AMCD — Multicultural Counseling and Development
- ASGW — Specialists in Group Work
- IAMFC — Marriage and Family Counselors
- NCDA — Career Development (historically the oldest, tracing to 1913's NVGA)
Now the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). NBCC is an independent credentialing body, spun off from ACA in 1982. NBCC does not lobby or set the Code of Ethics — it certifies counselors. It owns the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential and specialty certs, and — crucially — it develops and administers the national exams, including the NCE (National Counselor Examination) and the NCMHCE. Many states use those NBCC exams for licensure, which is why NBCC's reach extends well beyond its own certificates.
Two other names worth filing: CACREP accredits training programs (not people), and CRCC handles rehabilitation counseling certification. But the ACA-versus-NBCC split is the workhorse distinction.
Clinical Pearl: ACA = membership + ethics code + advocacy + divisions; NBCC = certification + the NCC credential + the NCE/NCMHCE exams. If a stem mentions the exam you're taking or the NCC, that's NBCC, not ACA.
