NCE Domain Map and Study Plan: NBCC Weights, CACREP Areas, and the Free Sample Topic
By David Zimmerman · 7 min read · Study strategy
The NCE has two maps. NBCC scores it in six domains with published weights[1]; your program taught it in the CACREP core areas[2]. Studying by the first map tells you where the points are; studying by the second tells you where the content is. This post lines them up, lists the 227 topics CaseSavvy’s NCE library covers by area, gives you a study-plan skeleton built on the weights, and lets you try the free sample topic’s question in the post.
Map 1: where the points are (NBCC domains)
| NBCC domain | Weight | What lives here |
|---|---|---|
| Counseling Skills and Interventions | 33% | Theories, techniques, the relationship, crisis, group leadership: the largest domain by far |
| Professional Practice and Ethics | 19% | ACA and NBCC codes, confidentiality, supervision, credentialing, advocacy, research ethics |
| Areas of Clinical Focus | 18% | Diagnosis-specific knowledge: mood, anxiety, trauma, substance use, eating, personality, psychosis |
| Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis | 16% | Psychometrics, instruments, interviewing, DSM-5-TR structure |
| Treatment Planning | 8% | Goals, evidence-based matching, career and developmental planning |
| Core Counseling Attributes | 6% | Self-awareness, cultural humility, wellness |
Map 2: where the content is (CACREP areas)
| CACREP area | Topics in the library | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Professional Counseling Orientation & Ethical Practice | 32 | Codes of ethics, licensure vs. certification, supervision, advocacy, history of the profession |
| Social & Cultural Diversity | 23 | MSJCC, acculturation, privilege and oppression, culturally responsive assessment |
| Human Growth & Development | 29 | Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg, attachment, lifespan transitions |
| Career Development | 21 | Holland, Super, Krumboltz, career assessments, decision-making models |
| Counseling & Helping Relationships | 45 | Theories and techniques, the alliance, crisis, telehealth |
| Group Counseling & Group Work | 13 | Stages, leader skills, Yalom's factors, ethics of groups |
| Assessment & Testing | 20 | Reliability, validity, norms, instrument selection, DSM-5-TR essentials |
| Research & Program Evaluation | 18 | Designs, statistics, program evaluation, ethics of research |
| Areas of Clinical Focus | 26 | Diagnosis-specific presentations and treatments |
The two maps cross: Human Growth & Development topics score mostly under Counseling Skills and Areas of Clinical Focus; Research & Program Evaluation scores under Professional Practice. CaseSavvy tags every topic with both, so you can browse by the course you took and see which NBCC domain the points land in.

Topic 1 of 227 is Erikson’s psychosocial stages, free for every account with its summary, cheat sheet, and this question. Answer it, then read the rationale for every option; that is the format for all 227.
According to Erikson, which psychosocial crisis is the central task of adolescence?

A study-plan skeleton built on the weights
| Weeks | Focus | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Counseling & Helping Relationships (45 topics) + Group Work (13) | Feeds the 33% Counseling Skills domain |
| 4 | Professional Orientation & Ethics (32) | 19% of the exam and the most rule-based, so it converts fastest |
| 5–6 | Areas of Clinical Focus (26) + Assessment & Testing (20) | ACF 18% and IAD 16%; instruments and DSM-5-TR structure overlap |
| 7 | Human Growth & Development (29) + Career Development (21) | Stages and theorists by name; heavy on recall |
| 8 | Social & Cultural Diversity (23) + Research & Program Evaluation (18) | Shorter areas; research statistics need a concentrated pass |
| 9–10 | Weakest domains by your question accuracy, then full mixed sets | Same loop as the NCMHCE side: find the weak area, drill it, confirm mixed |

Frequently asked questions
What are the NCE content domains?
NBCC scores six: Counseling Skills and Interventions (largest), Professional Practice and Ethics, Areas of Clinical Focus, Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis, Treatment Planning, and Core Counseling Attributes. The content itself is the CACREP core curriculum.
Which NCE area should I study first?
Counseling and helping relationships plus group work, because they feed the largest NBCC domain (about a third of the exam), then professional orientation and ethics, which is rule-based and converts fastest.
