Free 2027 NCE Practice Test: 6 Three-Option Questions, One per Domain
By David Zimmerman, RN · 8 min read · Study strategy
On July 1, 2027, the NCE changes shape. NBCC’s new specifications cut the exam to 170 multiple-choice questions with 3 options each instead of four, reorganize the content into six new domains, and report a scaled score instead of a raw one[1]. Practice questions written for today’s exam have four options. Below are 6 questions in the 2027 format, one from each new domain, taken from the CaseSavvy NCE bank and shown exactly as our 2027 practice sitting shows them.
If you test before the switch, the current-format free NCE practice test is the better warm-up. Not sure which side of the date you land on? Read whether to take the NCE before or after July 2027.
What does the 2027 NCE look like?
Here is the format from NBCC’s “NCE Examination Specifications, effective July 1, 2027”[1]:
- 170 questions, 3 options each. 30 are unscored field-test items, randomly distributed and identical in format, so 140 count toward your score.
- 225 minutes (3 hours 45 minutes), with an optional 15-minute break halfway through.
- Two halves. You can review questions within a half before you submit it. Once you submit the first half and the break begins, you cannot go back to it.
- Scaled scores from 100–500, with 360 passing on every form. NBCC says the scale is not a raw score and cannot be turned into a percent correct. You also get general feedback for each domain.
For the full list of changes, including the new task statements on AI, telemental health, and billing, see the 2027 NCE changes explained.

Each heading names the 2027 domain we mapped the item to and that domain’s share of the exam. Answer before you read the rationale, and keep a tally. Every option gets an explanation, including the two you did not pick. Each item links to its free topic page if you want to review afterward.

How should you read your result?
Lightly. 6 items is a sampler, not a predictor. One question is about 17 percentage points here, so a single lucky guess changes the picture. Keep one more number in mind: with three options, blind guessing averages 2 right out of 6. A score near that tells you nothing about what you know.
What a miss can tell you is the kind of gap you have:
- You did not know the concept (what a stanine is, what the ACA Code says about interruptions in service). That is a content gap and the cheapest to fix. Read the topic page and its cheat sheet.
- You narrowed it to two and picked the wrong one (operant vs. classical extinction, random assignment vs. random selection). That is a discrimination gap. In these items the least plausible distractor was the one removed, so the two you are left weighing are the close ones. Our post on three-option questions covers how to work the last two.
- You knew it but misread the stem (“in that order,” “before she leaves”). That is a reading habit. It is fixed with timed volume, not more content. See our NCE test-taking strategies.

What does the full 2027 practice sitting include?
Inside the CaseSavvy NCE app you choose the form each time you start a full-length exam: “Current NCE” or “2027 NCE.” The 2027 sitting is built to NBCC’s 2027 specifications[1]:
- 170 items with 3 options. All 2,455 questions in our NCE bank are mapped to a 2027 domain, and each has one distractor removed for the 2027 form. That mapping was audited item by item, and the dropped option is that item’s least plausible distractor, never the answer.
- 140 scored and 30 unscored field-test items, mixed in, so you practice treating every question as if it counts.
- Two halves of 85 with a break after item 85. Review is limited to the half you are in, and the first half locks once you submit it, the same rule as the real exam.
- A pacing budget of about 79 seconds per item, which is 225 minutes spread over 170 questions.
- Results by 2027 domain, so you can see whether Legal & Ethical Compliance or Indirect Client Care is the one pulling you down.
Premium also includes a half-length 2027 form (85 items, no break) for shorter sessions.
How is the 2027 practice sitting scored?
You get a raw score out of 140 scored items plus a percentage. Next to it is an estimated passing band of 86–97 of 140 (61%–69%), with a readout of whether you landed above, inside, or below it. The report labels it an estimate.
Here is where the band comes from. On the current exam, candidates commonly report raw cut scores of roughly 90–105 of 160. That range is unofficial; NBCC sets the cut per form and does not publish one[2]. We carried that range over to three options with a standard correction for guessing. That correction treats the removed option as an average distractor; removing the weakest one helps less than that, so the band leans a little high on purpose. Read more in how the NCE passing score is set.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free 2027 NCE practice test?
Yes. This page has six free practice questions in the 2027 format (three options each), one for each of NBCC's six 2027 domains, with a rationale for every option. A free CaseSavvy account also includes one full-length NCE practice sitting, and you can choose the 2027 form: 170 items with three options, 140 scored and 30 unscored field-test items, in two halves of 85.
How is the 2027 NCE scored?
NBCC reports a scaled score from 100 to 500, and 360 passes on every form. The passing standard is set by Angoff review of each item and later forms are equated. NBCC says the scaled score is not a raw score and cannot be converted to a percent correct. Only the 140 scored items count; the 30 field-test items do not. You also get general feedback for each domain.
How is the CaseSavvy 2027 practice sitting scored?
It reports your raw score out of 140 scored items plus a percentage, an estimated passing band of 86 to 97 of 140 (61% to 69%) with an above, inside, or below readout, and results by 2027 domain. It does not show a 100 to 500 score, because NBCC publishes no raw-to-scaled conversion.
Can I take the current NCE form instead?
Yes. You choose the form each time you start a full-length sitting: the current NCE (200 items, four options, 160 scored) or the 2027 NCE (170 items, three options, 140 scored). Pick the one that matches the exam you will sit. For current-format sample questions, see the free NCE practice test post.
How many questions are on the 2027 NCE?
170 multiple-choice questions with three options each, starting July 1, 2027. Thirty are unscored field-test items mixed in, so 140 count. You have 225 minutes, with an optional 15-minute break halfway.
