Free NCE Practice Test: 9 Questions Across Every CACREP Area Plus Clinical Focus, With Rationales
By David Zimmerman, RN · 8 min read · Study strategy
Most “free NCE practice tests” are either ten recall questions with no explanation or a sign-up wall in disguise. This one is neither. Below are 9 NCE-style questions, one from each of the eight CACREP core areas plus NBCC’s clinical focus area, taken straight from the CaseSavvy NCE bank. Pick an answer and you get the reasoning for all four options, not just the right one, because the wrong options are where most of the learning is.
After the questions, you will find where to get more for free: a public library with a study summary, a cheat sheet, and a practice question for every NCE topic, and a free full-length timed exam built to the official blueprint.
How is the real NCE built?
So you know what these questions are practice for, here is the exam as NBCC’s current candidate handbook describes it[1]:
| Feature | Current NCE |
|---|---|
| Items | 200 multiple-choice, four options, one correct |
| Scored | 160 scored; 40 unscored field-test items mixed in |
| Time | 225 minutes of testing in a 255-minute appointment |
| Break | One scheduled 15-minute break after item 100 |
| Structure | Non-sectioned: the six content domains are mixed together, not blocked |
| Guessing | No penalty; answer every item |
The content comes from two maps laid over each other: the eight CACREP curriculum areas you studied in your program and six work-behavior domains from NBCC’s job analysis[1]. CaseSavvy organizes its 227 topics under the eight CACREP areas plus a ninth for areas of clinical focus, which is why there are nine questions here. Our NCE overview explains both maps.
The free NCE practice questions
Answer each one before you read the rationale. Keep a tally; we will come back to what your score can and cannot tell you. Each heading links to that topic’s free study page if you want to review the concept afterward.
1. Professional Counseling Orientation & Ethical Practice
Topic: Counseling minors: legal issues
Professional Orientation & Ethics
A father separated from the child's mother asks to see his son's counseling records. The mother enrolled the boy and signed the consent forms. No court paperwork is in the file. What should the counselor do first?
2. Social & Cultural Diversity
Topic: Multicultural & social justice counseling competencies
Social & Cultural Diversity
A counselor completes bias training, studies her client's community history, and adapts her interventions accordingly. She then testifies at a state hearing on insurance parity. Which framework does the testimony reflect, and what does that framework add?
3. Human Growth & Development
Topic: Kohlberg's moral development
Human Growth & Development
Two clients both say Heinz should steal the drug. One explains that a human life outranks any statute; the other says Heinz needs his wife around. How would Kohlberg stage them?
4. Career Development
Topic: Holland's RIASEC theory
Career Development
A client's six RIASEC scores are nearly equal, with no type standing out. This pattern illustrates:
5. Counseling & Helping Relationships
Topic: REBT
Counseling & Helping Relationships
A client began REBT insisting, 'I must get this promotion or I'm a failure.' After several sessions of disputation, which statement shows she has reached E, an effective new philosophy?
6. Group Counseling & Group Work
Topic: Ethics in group work
Group Counseling
A member mentions at the start of session that she told her sister what another member disclosed last week. The other member looks stunned. What should the leader do first?
7. Assessment & Testing
Topic: Validity
Assessment & Testing
Validation data show a new social-anxiety scale correlates highly with two established social-anxiety measures and near zero with a measure of arithmetic skill. What does this pattern demonstrate?
8. Research & Program Evaluation
Topic: Descriptive statistics
Research & Program Evaluation
Scores on a coping-skills measure cluster near the top of the scale, with a scattering of very low scores trailing off toward the bottom. How is this distribution best described?
9. Areas of Clinical Focus
Topic: Bipolar spectrum
Areas of Clinical Focus
A four-day stretch of reckless spending, flight of ideas, and constant talking left a client hospitalized. He has never had a period of depression. What does this history establish?
What does your score on these nine mean?
Honestly, not much yet. Nine items is a sampler, not a predictor: one lucky guess moves you eleven percentage points. Use the set for something more useful than a score: notice how you missed.
- You did not recognize the term (MSJCC, low differentiation, discriminant evidence): that is a content gap, and it is the cheapest kind to fix. Read the topic page and its cheat sheet.
- You knew the term but picked a neighbor (Stage 5 instead of Stage 6, a positive skew where the tail points low): that is a discrimination gap. Fix it with questions that put the look-alikes side by side.
- You knew the content but missed the qualifier (“first,” the detail that the client was hospitalized): that is a reading habit, and it is fixed with volume under time. Our NCE test-taking strategies post covers it.

Where can you get more free NCE practice?
1. The free NCE topic library
Every one of CaseSavvy’s 227 NCE topics has a public page with a study summary, a cheat sheet, and one practice question with rationales. No account needed. Browse the full topic library or start with an area: professional orientation and ethics, human growth and development, assessment and testing, or research and program evaluation.
2. One free full-length timed exam
A free account gets one full-length practice exam that mirrors the real format: 200 items, 225 minutes, a scheduled break after item 100, mark-for-review, and no answer feedback until the end. The report shows your raw score out of 160 scored items and your accuracy in each of NBCC’s six domains. Take it early, before you feel ready; a baseline is worth more than a good score. The report also breaks accuracy down by CACREP area, flags pacing problems, and lists your weakest topics. Testing on or after July 1, 2027? Choose the 2027 form instead: 170 items with 3 options each. Six free three-option questions are in our 2027 NCE practice test.
3. The free sample topic
Erikson’s psychosocial stages is free in full inside the app: the lesson, all 10 practice questions, and its review cards. Its public page is here.
When free stops being enough
Free material is good for a baseline and for patching specific gaps. Most candidates need volume on top of it: hundreds of questions across all nine areas (the eight CACREP areas plus clinical focus), spaced review of the facts they keep missing, and at least two timed full-length runs. CaseSavvy NCE Premium unlocks all 227 topics with 10+ questions each (2,455 in all, every one tagged to the facts it tests and independently audited), Daily Learning spaced review over 4,374 flashcards, a study plan built on the NBCC weights, a study-guide matcher that maps your syllabus or notes to topics, and unlimited full- and half-length timed exams. It is $19/month, $49 for a four-month semester, or $89/year.
Before you pay for anything, read how long to study for the NCE and how the NCE is scored, and use our printable NCE study guide by CACREP area as your checklist.
