Most identity models ask how members of oppressed groups develop; Janet Helms flipped the lens and asked how White people develop a healthy, non-racist racial identity. Examiners like this one because it names statuses (Helms deliberately moved away from calling them rigid "stages") and because it moves toward the goal of abandoning racism and internalizing a positive, non-racist White identity.
Helms described six statuses across two phases. Phase one is about abandoning racism: Contact — obliviousness to race and racism, naive or colorblind, unaware of one's own White privilege. Disintegration — a first awareness of racism creates guilt, confusion, and moral dilemma. Reintegration — retreating into the comfort of the dominant worldview, idealizing Whiteness and blaming minorities (the most racially intolerant status). Phase two is about defining a positive White identity: Pseudo-Independence — an intellectual acceptance that racism exists and curiosity about other groups, but still somewhat detached and looking to people of color to explain racism. Immersion-Emersion — replacing myths and stereotypes with accurate information and honestly confronting one's own biases and what it means to be White. Autonomy — internalizing a non-racist White identity, valuing diversity, and being comfortable and proactive in cross-racial relationships.
The arc runs from oblivious, guilt, defensive retreat, intellectual acceptance, honest self-confrontation, to internalized non-racist identity.
Counseling implications: a White counselor's own status shapes the work — a Contact or Reintegration counselor may miss or dismiss a client's racial concerns, while an Autonomy counselor can broach race comfortably. Status also informs work with White clients exploring race and privilege. Helms emphasized that development can revisit statuses rather than march in one fixed line.
Clinical Pearl: The tested order is Contact, Disintegration, Reintegration, Pseudo-Independence, Immersion-Emersion, Autonomy; Reintegration is the most intolerant status, and Autonomy is the endpoint of a positive, non-racist White identity.
